How to Be the Rebel Spy on Star Tours

The words “Now Boarding” are displayed on the screens above the entry way to the ride.  You feel the adrenaline pumping as you get closer to your dream of becoming the rebel spy on your favorite ride only to find that another passenger is selected.  However, after reading this blog post you will know how to be selected as the rebel spy the next time you ride Star Tours – The Adventures Continue (just like how I was!)

Star Tours – The Adventures Continue has been a loved attraction among all Star Wars fans that visit Walt Disney World ever since it first opened on May 20, 2011.  Since opening, it has also been a goal of fans of this ride to be the rebel spy and have their picture flash across the screen as the ride begins.

During each journey passengers embark on in Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, a rebel spy is selected.  The rebel spy plays a key part in the ride as the whole point of the ride is to keep the rebel spy safe from the dark side.

In order to help you become the rebel spy the next time you ride Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, I have compiled a list of top suggestions on how to do this:

Know when the rebel spy is chosen

Disney hasn’t said but it is assumed that the photo of the rebel spy is taken as everyone is getting settled and seated before the ride begins, and the rebel spy may even be chosen from a photo of the entire ride vehicle– someone is sure to look like they’re part of a rebel alliance!

Face forward before the ride begins

It is believed that facing forward before the ride starts is important, as a photo is used to show who is the rebel spy, and this would not work with you facing different directions.  As a result, it is important to keep still and keep your eyes forward.  However, I would suggest not smiling as this would make it too obvious that you are attempting to be the rebel spy.  I think that this also results in adults being selected as the rebel spy more often than kids.  Kids do not always face toward the front of the ride as they are always moving.

Don’t put the 3D glasses on until the ride starts

While individuals that have 3D glasses on have been selected as the rebel spy before, this is not typically the case.  Most times the rebel spy is a ride passenger that does not have their 3D glasses on.  If you already have the 3D glasses on at the beginning of the ride, they are blocking your face.  As a result, your chances of being selected will not be good.  The rebel spy is usually someone whose face is clear.

In addition, if you are like me and wear glasses, it may also help to remove these.  While you will not be able to see perfectly for a few minutes, it is worth it to become the rebel spy.  If you are wearing your glasses, there may be glare in the picture.  As a result, they would not use the picture and select someone else as the rebel spy.

If you ride the ride many times in a row, look for a pattern in the rebel spy

Some days rebel spies take on a certain “type” of person over another.  For example, sometimes the rebel a serious look on their face and is not smiling or acting silly.  As I stated earlier in this blog post, if you are smiling or acting silly it makes it too obvious that you are attempting to be the rebel spy.  However, this may not make that much of a difference as sometimes the rebel spy is an individual making a silly looking face.

It may help to be in a big group

Sometimes when the rebel spy is in a group it will get a good reaction out of the crowd.  By selecting an individual that is part of a large group a better crowd reaction will be caused.  This makes it more fun!

Go during a time when the ride is empty

When I was selected as the rebel spy I went during a time when the ride was empty, during Fantasmic.  While Fantasmic is going on, most Disney’s Hollywood Studios guests are watching the show.  In addition, while any shows are going on in Disney’s Hollywood Studios most guests are either watching the show or are at the more popular rides such as Toy Story Midway Mania.

Now that you have discovered my tips to becoming the rebel spy you can help the rebellion by becoming the rebel spy!

  1. I’ve observed a lot of the same things such as facing forward, not having the 3D glasses on, etc. I hadn’t thought about the benefit of being part of a big group. I was once the rebel spy 3 times in a row at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Lots of fun!

    1. 3 times in a row?! That’s crazy! I’ve been the rebel spy once, but there were only a few other people on the ride so my chances were better lol

  2. In June 2018, I was the spy 2 days in a row. I was new to WDW and didn’t know this was something to try to achieve! I was sitting in totally different place each time. I wondered if it had anything to do with info on my magic band. Might my travel agent have coded something in there for fun?

    1. I don’t think it’s something your travel agent can do, it seems like it’s a little bit of random magic. But that’s so cool that you were the rebel spy twice like that!

  3. Our family of five have all been the spy at least once, except for our youngest (he’s 20 now). He’s the biggest Star Wars fan and now it’s our family joke that he’ll never be the spy. We are actually in the car right now on the way to Disneyland so I found your article while trying to find a way to help him be the spy. He’s done all of the things you mentioned except take off his glasses. He’ll try it this time and I’ll let you know if it works finally. Thanks! 🙂

    1. Have a wonderful trip! Hopefully these tips help, it’s pretty cool that most of you have already been the rebel spy before!

  4. I was the rebel spy once but I honestly think it was because it was my birthday and I was wearing the birthday pin. It was still a total surprise and honestly made my trip!

  5. I was picked as the rebel spy back around Halloween 2011 or 2012. We got a real kick out of it since I was wearing a Star Trek Starfleet uniform. I had always thought the spy was picked automatically but it warms my heart to know whoever was on ride duty that day had a great sense of humor.
